The reduction of nitrobenzene (ArNO{sub}2) was investigated in a zero-valent iron (ZVI) system (Fe{sup}0) with the addition of ferrous ions (Fe{sup}(2+)) using batch tests. The results indicated that the reductive product of nitrobenzene was not changed with the addition of Fe{sup}(2+), and ArNO{sub}2 was reduced to aniline by Fe{sup}0. The reductive reaction rate of ArNO{sub}2 was enhanced with the addition of Fe{sup}(2+). The lepidocrocite with a flake-like structure formed the outer layer of corrosion coating. The Fe{sup}(2+) was adsorbed on the surface of iron powder. The addition of Fe{sup}(2+) into ZVI system could favor the reduction of ArNO{sub}2 in the in situ remediation of groundwater.
