The aim of the paper is to highlight the difficulties in interpreting dissipation tests in silts. This is addressed by presenting in situ soil responses in silts from three sites and discussing the analysis of dissipation tests using two methods. One is a conventional correction method and the other a recently published empirical method. Standard and non-standard dissipation responses are analysed. Recent developments to account for partial drainage effects in dissipation tests are discussed and applied where practical. Some of the difficulties in applying theoretical solutions to estimate the coefficient of horizontal consolidation (c_h) are outlined specifically for silts. The results illustrate the challenges in assessing non-standard dissipation data reliably and interpreting c_h. A significant difference in estimated c_h was found depending on which method of analysis was used. Correction for partial drainage represented higher values of c_h.
