SETI Science: A Search Is Born

In 1959, a landmark article in Nature marked the beginning of the modern observational Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. Over the next quarter-century, the field of study now known as SETI emerged out of the realm of science fiction, entering the scientific mainstream. This overview of that 25 year period is neither complete nor comprehensive, but rather representative of SETI progress during the discipline's formative years. Although the author concentrates primarily on early SETI history in the US, he encourages scientists from the rest of the world to document their progress -- and that of their colleagues, as well.
