New Core Binder System for Aluminum Casting Based on Polysaccharide

Conventional core system, such as shell core system and cold box system, are popularly applied to the production of cores for aluminum castings, but the current problem with them is the difficulty of core sand removal from castings as the decomposing of core sand binder in aluminum castings is insufficient due to low pouring temperature of aluminum alloy compared to ferrous castings. Under this situation, the authors have started the development of the core system using the new binder of polysaccharide-based and obtained the successful results in improving core collapsibility and curtailment of offensive odor. This new core system is also easy in sand reclamation and has many unique features such as (1) the core sand mixture becomes slurry state at mixing, (2) the sand core is molded by the pressurized filling method and (3) the molded core becomes hollow. The physical properties and characteristics of the core by this new core system have been examined and verified in this paper.
