An improved core sand binder is described for modern casting operations, which eliminates exposures to toxic gases in core making, shakes out easily from iron and aluminum castings, and minimizes binder residues in used sand. The material is a biopolymer-based binder that was developed and tested to im- prove the workplace environment and casting productivity, and reduce contamination on sand wastes. The water-soluble binder produces core samples of equal or greater strength than coldbox binders at comparable cycle times. These cores, if flawed, may be melted in water and reblown.
