Optimization of systems already established on the market has in some foundries lead to drastic reductions in emissions and an improvement in working conditions. Modern furan resin systems help to cut emissions both in the molding shop as well as on the pouring lines. Compared with standard binders, BTX emissions have been dramatically reduced, while the simultaneous reduction in sulfur concentration in the binder and mold material improves the quality of the casting surface and minimizes SO2 concentrations in the waste gases. When it comes to polyurethane binders, improvements in the processes during resin condensation have helped to reduce not only smoke levels during casting but also odors. As the examples demonstrate, good cooperation between the foundries and developers of binder systems helps not only to improve the technology involved in the manufacture of molds and cores but also to fulfill evermore stringent environmental requirements.
