Electron beam (KB) curing technology is very attractive for printing and packaging applications. It offers high speed, energy efficient curing of solvent-free inks, coatings. and adhesives. EB is often selected for applications requiring low migration since the output of KB systems is very consistent at all process speeds and cures without the need for added photoinitiator. EB energy penetration is not affected by opaque materials which allows curing of high density ink layers as well as laminations through opaque films, papers, and foils. EB is well established for web offset package printing; however, flexographic. gravurc. screen, and ink jet ink curing have also been demonstrated. EB is also well suited for unique decorating/converting application such as foil transfer and hologram embossing. Increasing use of EB technology is expected due to these processing advantages as well as advances in EB systems designed specifically for printing and packaging applications.
