Performance Analysis of WDM-MIMO Free Space Optical System under Atmospheric Turbulence

Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is widely used in fiber optics to utilize the capacity of a fiber channel more efficiently. Studies show that WDM could also be utilized in free space optical communication (FSO) systems to improve the performance of system considering the frequencies lying in visible light spectrum range. Taking a step further towards the improvement of the FSO communication systems, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) FSO links are gaining popularity as a result of their performance under atmospheric scintillation occurring due to variation of index of refraction of the optical medium due to variations in density and pressure of the medium at different points of observation over the path of propagation of an optical signal. This paper particularly focuses on analyzing the performance of FSO-WDM, FSO-MIMO and FSO-WDM-MIMO systems considering different weather conditions. Performance of the different systems has also been compared in terms of received signal power and the quality factor of the received signal for haze atmosphere.
