The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of parallelogram-shaped pavementmarkings on vehicle speeds and speed violations in vicinity of pedestrian crosswalk on urban roadwaysin China. The research team collected more than 6,000 speed observations at seven sites. T-test andproportionality test were conducted to identify if the effects of parallelogram-shaped pavementmarkings on vehicle speeds and speed violations were statistically significant. The speed data analysisresults showed that parallelogram-shaped pavement markings significantly reduce vehicle speeds andspeed violations in vicinity of pedestrian crosswalks. Speed profiles were developed using speed datameasured at varying distances from pedestrian crosswalks. The results showed that the influence area ofparallelogram-shaped pavement markings was generally less than 0.3 km. Drivers usually start todecelerate vehicle speeds at about 100 to 150 meters ahead of the pedestrian crosswalks and vehiclespeeds are recovered at about 100 to 150 meters after pedestrian crosswalks.
