Analysis on Metro Commuters’ Satisfaction in Multi-type Access and Egress Transferring Groups

Most of previous studies that evaluated commuters’ satisfaction on public transit considered theaccess and egress stages separately. This paper takes the access and egress stages together as awhole process to analyze travelers’ satisfaction level on the metro-commuting journey. Based onthe survey in Nanjing, China, 7 intermodal travel groups are taken as the targets for this analysis.They are WMW, WMT, BMW, BMT, TMW, TMT and CMW, which are named after the initialletter of modes used in access and egress trips. Binary Logit models are then developed for eachgroup to identify the key factors in satisfaction level. The results show that access and egressstages play important but different roles in the 7 groups. And facility services qualities in twostages are key factors that affect the overall satisfaction. The groups with same access or egressmodes have very different core factors. Accessing by bike, bike-metro-transit users care muchabout bike parking safety while bike-metro-walk users value parking space near metro. With twobus-metro transfers, transit-metro-transit users identify that the weak point in access stage is thecrowded spaces on bus. However, transit-metro-walk users value access bus frequency, which isthe common weak point in groups with one bus-metro transfer. When egress by walk, commutersusing motorized mode to access are found to concern about egress walking environment whilethose using non-motorized access modes care more about egress walking spaces. Findings of thisstudy are of considerable help for the policy development in view of improving the public’ssatisfaction level of commuting by urban metro.
