Think about the last time you made a benefit election or added an expense report to a system of record. If your experience was simple and straightforward, you probably felt relieved, even satisfied. If your experience ended up in failure or a frustrating series of stops and starts, you probably felt angry about how much time you wasted and dread your next encounter with the expense reporting application. When a user opens an application, she sees the face of the application: the user interface. The visuals and the words that appear on that user interface-the general words, specialized terms, and phrases-induce a user to perform a task and help influence the user experience. This article explores the significance of these words, specialized terms, and phrases-the language design component-in the software design experience that includes visual design, interaction design, and language design.
