Is Big Data the Next Big Thing in Performance Measurement Systems?

This paper explores the relationship between big data and performance measurement systems. Generally, big data is associated to data that are produced in big velocity, variety, and volume. Companies nowadays are searching for ways to extract useful information from large amount of data. Nevertheless, big data requires advanced computational resources, statistical techniques, and data visualization techniques in order to store, process, and, in special, analyze all different kinds of data. The capability to create value from such high quantity of data is critical to get competitive advantages from the big data. In fact, big data is probably a new revolution in information management that can influence the way in which companies do their businesses. Consequently, the performance measurement system can also be affected. These systems are composed of a multidimensional set of performance measures used for planning, controlling, and improving business performance. Therefore, big data could contribute to different ways of using the performance measurement systems. Finally, this paper provides some insights into how big data influences the changes in performance measurement systems such as new kind of analytics, strategy challenge, and support to continuous improvement.
