The Status Quo of New-Energy Vehicles: A Multi-Stakeholders' Perspective

With a volatile oil price and the society's increasing concern about the greenhouse gas emission and the environmental pollution, many countries are looking for alternative fuel and more environmentally friendly energy resources to reduce oil consumption. As a result, transportation vehicles operated by alternative powers with low-carbon efficiency are receiving increasing attention these days. Although the concept of "new-energy vehicles" (NEV) is not new, these vehicles actually running on streets and parked at consumers' driveways are still relatively rare. Existing literature about NEV research and findings is scattered with richness in some areas but with limitations in others. This study aims to achieve two objectives through an extensive exploration and critical review of existing literature on NEV. The first is to provide a classification of NEVs so that the scope and nature of this new type of vehicles are clarified and understood. The second is to summarize different stakeholders' perspectives to generate insights for understanding the intricacy of NEV supply chain management. These stakeholders are consumers, governments, auto dealers, and final vehicle and part manufacturers.
