Comminution is oftentimes the first step in most waste treatment processes. Thecause lies in the conditioning of the material flow in order to be treated in the next processingsteps. By comminution, the particle size distribution of the material is manipulated. However,since some worthwhile products are defined by their upper and lower particle size limits,comminuted particles not fitting in between these limits are no longer of appropriate use.Wood chips, for instance, that originate from chunky wooden waste from biowaste can beused as a source of renewable energy in biomass fuel systems. Wood chips have differentqualities and are therefore dependent on the particle size distribution. Another importantquality characteristic is the particle shape. Long slim particle shapes lead to bridging in thesilo, which can cause problems in the feedings of biomass fuel systems. The aim of the paperis to portray how the comminution of wood can influence the particle size distribution, theparticle shape and its effects on the efficiency of the subsequent steps e.g. for energyrecovery.
