A Statewide Electronic Waste Composition Study – The Case of Delaware

An assessment of the Delaware Solid Waste Authority’s (DSWA’s) electronics goodsrecycling program was performed to evaluate the current and future trends of electronics recycling inthe State of Delaware. The assessment included: a review of electronics collected by weight, type,and source; surveys of social awareness and information regarding electronics deposited; as well asestimated predictions for the future of electronics recycling in the State of Delaware. The study isunique both because it serves as a statewide representation of electronic goods management and alsobecause Delaware does not have any state laws, bans or regulations pertaining to the treatment ofunwanted electronic products and thus the success of the program is an indicator of publicwillingness to recycle and DSWA’s efforts to promote such practices. The aim of this presentation isto display and discuss the results of the assessment and the larger impacts of the observed trends.
