A GPS-ENABLED SMART PHONE APP WITH SIMPLIFIED DIAGNOSIS FUNCTIONS OF DRIVING SAFETY AND WARNING INFORMATION PROVISION

We developed a GPS-enabled smart phone App "Safety Supporter" that diagnoses the driving safety based on both objective and subjective indicators. Objective indicators look at the compliance level of speed limit, acceleration and deceleration, and smoothness of driving in a given time period based on GPS information. Subjective indicators include a self-diagnosis of actual driving safety after each drive and a set of self-reported driving propensity. Furthermore, the App provides drivers with warning information before approaching an accident blackspot and also warn and guide them to take a rest at a service area (SA) or a parking area (PA) on expressways after driving for a certain length of time. For the privacy consideration, the App does not record the measurement results nearby origins and destinations. A pilot field experiment confirmed the applicability of the App.
