Formative testing was conducted to determine the pertinent design goals of the Connected Vehicle System (CVS) during its future development phase. Formative testing included a quasi-heuristic evaluation using a subject-matter expert review of a series of representative roadway scenarios. The final set of testing scenarios included a broad range of driving and traffic demands from light traffic on a two-lane roadway to dense traffic in an urban environment (e.g., downtown in a large city). During testing, experts participated in a cognitive walkthrough of roadway scenarios and answered interview questions conducted to gain insight into appropriate integration techniques for connected vehicles.
