This paper presents a new concept for implementing a gainstep directly in a passive sliding IF mixer without using additional elements in the signal path. A detailed mathematical analysis of the gainstep mechanism is given and the calculation is supported by simulation results. Measurements of a RF-transceiver chip including the mixer fabricated on a standard 130 nm CMOS technology verifies both analysis and simulation results. A significant reduction in power consumption could be observed when operating the mixer in the low gain mode.
