Implementation and Evaluation of Adaptive Multi-gateway Mesh Network

In developing countries, disaster areas, and other places where communication infrastructure is unstable, people need a system that allows them to easily install a network in any location. In this paper, we propose the mesh network named Adaptive Multi-Gateway Mesh Network (AMGMN). AMGMN supports wired and wireless LANs. The combination of wired and wireless LANs prevents radio interference and ensures ease of network installation. AMGMN creates a multi-gateway topology to prevent the traffic load from being concentrated on one gateway node. To ensure the path to the Internet, nodes changes their default gateways autonomously. We implemented AMGMN on a bootable USB, thus, the network would install automatically. Evaluation indicated that the routing overhead is small. We also evaluated radio disturbance prevention by packet arrival rate, and the results indicate that wired LANs can prevent radio disturbance. In the evaluation of load balancing, we confirmed that nodes can balance traffic load by selecting the parent node that has the least child nodes. We conducted the comparison between open80211s and AMGMN, and we showed that AMGMN can achieve 1.4 times higher throughput than open80211s.
