In this work, a home power management system is proposed to minimize electricity cost and reduce high peak demand while maintaining user comfort. The system is composed of smart electrical appliances, which are divided into three subclasses as uncontrollable, semi-controllable and controllable, power units (photovoltaic system, grid, battery), communication network and a main controller. At the beginning of each day, the main controller gathers user request and power resource information and solves a mixed integer programming problem formulated with the smart and energy efficient operation constraints defined for appliances and power resources. The solution of this problem provides cost minimizing schedules of controllable appliances and power resources. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed home power management system significantly reduces the electrical costs and peak demand.
