Analysis of Pedestrian Safety at Signalized Intersections Based on Pedestrian Crossing Behavior

Signalized intersections, as an integral part of the road traffic system, are also where pedestrian behavior is most responsible for pedestrian crashes. Road safety studies have traditionally leaned more heavily toward motorist behavior and vehicular characteristics; however, in order to better understand the mechanisms of pedestrian crashes and better protect pedestrians, the study of pedestrian crossing behavior should also be emphasized. Through observational data collection and the use of statistical analysis methods, this paper analyzes pedestrian safety at signalized intersections based on the study of four pedestrian crossing behavioral characteristics, including pedestrian walking speed, gap acceptance, visual gaze and field of vision, as well as pedestrian delay. The focuses and findings of this paper can serve to complement, to a small extent, existing pedestrian safety studies which are more vehicle and motorist inclined, and bring about new ideas for future exploration.
