Influence of Weather and Climate on Electric-Bicyclists' Crossing Behaviors at Signalized Intersection

This study investigates the impacts of both (short-term) weather conditions and (long-term) seasonal variation on electric bicyclists' crossing behaviors at signalized intersections. Based on a field investigation conducted in Guilin, China, It was determined that the probability of an electric bicyclist's violation was related to its relative flow and to independent variables (weather and climate) using negative binomial regression. The results show that the probability of violations under bad weather is about 13% more than under good weather, even though bad weather is generally associated with increased risk. The violation probability also shifted with changes of air temperature, and the probability decreased at intersections where the stop area of electric bikes (e-bikes) was protected by facilities such as sunshades and awnings. The results revealed consistent gender differences: men's behavior of unlawful crossing was higher than that of women; women also report more frequently than men that they are motivated by climate.
