Nanotechnology: Exemplifing the essence of STEM education

The last several decades have seen nanoscience concepts move from research level students and educators to undergraduate level content. More recently, high school educators have used nanotechnology to ignite student interest in science. Nanotechnology is now discussed with younger children in both formal and informal settings. In addition to fueling an interest in science and science careers, nanoscience concepts can be used to increase critical thinking skills, reasoning capability and more broadly nanoscience can be used enhance STEM education at all levels. A series of nanotechnology based hands on activities that have been used by over 21,000 students is being modified to address STEM aspects. The methodology for the modifications is to use adaptable flow charts that allow educators to select the path for the activity and the depth of content to be covered. Focus groups and surveys will determine the usefulness and effectiveness of this approach and provide information for improvement.
