Considering the large material removal characteristic of the rough machining which is large diameter deep flow channel 3-D impeller in the national million tons of ethylene project, a strategy called five-axis plunge milling processing is proposed in order to improve the efficiency of processing and reduce the production cost. The location of the tool center point and the direction of the axis of the tool were determined with the help of the tool center point of the side milling and the cutter-axis vector. On this basis, the multi-axis drilling modules of the PowerMill software is used to generate the five-axis plunge milling cutter path which applies to the rough machining of the impeller flow channel. The experiment results showed that by this rough machining method, the efficiency of processing can be improved by more than 50% compared with the conventional machining method.
