Study on the Perception of the Architectural Elements and Spaces in European Paintings

The purpose of the study is to obtain the fundamental knowledge for the two-dimensional representation for architecture and spaces, which are the three-dimensional entity, through the indication experiment on the perception of the impressive elements and the analysis of their compositions in the Western paintings.The research presents the results that the most indicated elements are "human" elements, and the second are "architecture" elements, while the different indication tendencies are observed between male and female subjects for some indicated elements.In this study, the characteristics of the composition of the indicated elements in the paintings are categorized into three types: "One-point Focus", "Multi-point Focus", and "Dispersed" based on the downward trend of the number of the indicated elements.The "architecture" elements in the middle ground are often perceived as strong elements, while they are not considered the main figure in the paintings.Overall, the strong elements are placed in the middle of the paintings and the left and right of the center, while some paintings towards the Modem era have a tendency of not concentrating the impressive elements in the middle of the paintings.
