Solar radiation typically enters a room through a window.This study examines the solar heat gain performance of the Korean traditional window system in a modern house.Since development of the window lattice, a fine shading device in modern house is a feature of the Korean traditional window system, and thus, we evaluate the shading factor.The aim of this study is to develop a shading factor calculating procedure for direct radiation.The study proposes a methodology to calculate the shading factor for direct radiation in a Korean-style traditional window system.The calculation procedure proposed in five steps: I.modularization of the window lattice;2.calculation of the sun position and surface orientation;3.Calculation of the shaded area for each module;4.summation of each shaded area of the module and lattice area;and 5.Calculation of the total shading factor for direct radiation.The shading factor for direct radiation in a typical Korean traditional window system is calculated and evaluated using the procedure proposed in this study.
