Toward the establishment of industrial basis for producing high quality SiC/SiC fuel cladding by NITE process, a new concept of preform fabrication by pre-composite ribbon is provided and the current status of the pre-composite ribbon and the main features of the ribbon are also provided. By ribbon winding and lay-up procedure, the preform is semi-automatically fabricated. Thus the fiber architecture controllability and high density matrix formation capability have been drastically improved. The representing results utilizing carbon fibers with 1600 fibers/bundle or SiC fibers with 800 fibers/bundle and the preform was fabricated by semi-auto filament winding machine are described. Pre-composite ribbon is making many progresses in NITE process and these efforts are contributing improvement in quality and fabrication technology of fuel cladding for nuclear reactor.
