In this work, we derive an analytical model for the expected number of nodes detecting an object target at the boundary area of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Then we combine this expected number with the expected number of nodes detecting a target in an inner area by using a weighting factor to obtain the final expected number of nodes in the whole area of WSNs. We show that the results of our analytical model fits well with the simulation results. Ignoring the boundary area in the analytical calculation generates an expected number of nodes that misrepresents the actual value.
