Voltage control and load leveling of synchronous reluctance generator based DG set

This paper proposes an application of synchronous reluctance generator (SyRG) for the diesel generator (DG) based standalone supply systems. This system is supported by a battery energy storage system (BESS) for the voltage control and load leveling. A diesel engine is used as a prime mover to drive SyRG and a three leg voltage source converter (VSC) is used as a static compensator (STATCOM). The system is designed such that the SyRG is loaded between 80-100% irrespective of the loading condition to achieve a high fuel efficiency of the DG set. Therefore, for a load higher than 100% of the generator rated capacity, the BESS supplies the required power to the loads. Moreover, for the load less than 80% of the rated generator capacity, the BESS starts charging with the excess generated power. The system is designed such that the STATCOM provides load leveling, harmonics elimination, voltage control and load balancing. A modified instantaneous symmetrical component theory (ISCT) based control algorithm is used for the control of proposed system.
