Impedance-based distance protection algorithms are limited in speed by the phasors evaluation. The time-domain approach permits to break this limitation by the use of the differential equations of the electrical circuit. The incremental quantities methods have improved the speed of the algorithms but the use of a simple impedance model of line remains still a limitation in time. The paper proposes an ultra-fast distance protection based on the time-domain model of an RLC Gamma transmission line. The distance to fault is evaluated thanks to a Recursive Least Squares Estimation (RLSE) algorithm. The performances of the algorithm are presented for a three-phase Bergeron model of line with a double in-feed.
