Iraq's power system is facing significant challenges due to the mismatch between generation and supply. According to some studies there is a need for around 6GW more capacity to meet the increasing demand. To overcome this problem a large number of households are using diesel generators, either private or shared installed at the neighborhood location. If the existing diesel generators are best placed could provide benefits to the grid by providing flexibility in localized areas and help to avoid or reduce the number of blackouts. This paper is proposing a methodology to find the best placement and the right size of the diesel generators in the Baghdad area. The optimization of these two parameters will reduce the real power losses, stabilize the grid voltage, and increase the network performance. This optimization approach will also contribute to minimizing the level of acoustical noise for existing diesel generators which they are installed at the neighborhood location. The objective function is looking to minimize the real power losses of the network and keeping the voltage within the permissible levels. The economic impact is also assessed by calculating the saving obtained when the diesel generators are best placed in the network.
