In this paper, recorded videos from bus cameras are used as a new type of transportation data to identify theimpact of illegal parking on the performance of peak hour curbside bus-only lanes in Tokyo, Japan. We find thateven a few illegally parked vehicles could still significantly impair the performance of a bus lane, especially whenthey are parked near a bus stop. A microscopic traffic simulation is also carried on to evaluate quantitatively thepossible improving strategies, such as stricter enforcement, on the basis of the results obtained by the bus cameradata. Also, this research proves the potential of bus camera as a new type of data that can show not onlyperformances of a transportation system but also the underlying reasons of the performances.
