Urban sprawl is a multifaceted concept, which includes the spreading outwards of a city and itssuburbs to its outskirts to low-density and auto-dependent development on rural land, highsegregation of uses, and various design features that encourage car dependency. Urban sprawldirectly impacts traffic congestion, high oil consumption, and many other transportation issues. Itis evident that urban sprawl has negative impacts on both air quality and public health, whichaffects the human condition. This results in health issues for inner-city residents and airpollution. Air pollution can affect our health in many ways with both short-term and long-termeffects. The purpose of this research paper is to determine if Urban Sprawl is an emergingdilemma or if it has been an issue in past civilizations. Also to evaluate the positive and negativeeffects of urban sprawl on daily lives in the United States. To analyze whether or not the use of aSmart Growth project in the southeast that has been implemented, significantly addresses theeffects of urban sprawl. Finally to review past and present studies done on urban sprawl that willgive insight on how urban sprawl came to be, so conclusions and recommendations for futureresearch can be developed.
