PHASE-A STUDY OF GEOSTATIONARY MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS TEST SATELLITE IN JAPAN

Cost effective communications services with hand-held terminals for regional area can be provided by using a geostationary satellite because its total system is simple. But a large antenna reflector of greater than 10 meters in diameter and a baseband processor have to be installed on the satellite to compensate for hand-held terminal performance and to reduce total propagation time delay. In Engineering Test Satellite -N (ETS-N), single-hop mobile-to-mobile communications experiments at S-band with multiple beams frequency reuse using active phased array antennas and S-band digital broadcasting experiments providing compact-disk quality music for mobile terminals will be demonstrated. In addition, the satellite will carry an atomic clock and a navigation signal generator in order to acquire basic technologies needed for constructing a regional positioning satellite system. This paper describes an outline of ETS-N's payloads and its satellite bus system as a result of phase-A study completed.
