Thermal strengthening or tempering of glass has existed for more than 50 years. Due to the lack of an efficient accurate method for online inspection, the quality of the strengthening or tempering is measured on a sample basis using either destructive or non direct laboratory methods. Emhart Cilass Inc. has developed a new optical inspection method that can be used to inspect the profile of the stress distribution non-destruciively and obtain the quality of thermally hardened/tempered glass samples faster. I he detail of the method, measurement data of various glass samples, and the limitations of this method are presented.
