A Quantitative Evaluation of Query Expansion in Domain Specific Information Retrieval

This paper describes our different retrieval approachesconducted on a cultural heritage (CH) content testcollection.In our study, our main objective is to measurethe relative merit of various query expansion and semanticenrichment techniques. To do so we considered differentstrategies based on blind-query expansion as well as usingexternal resource, namely Wikipedia. In using externalknowledge bases we consider different strategies in order toselect the most appropriate concepts to be added to theinitial query. Our results show that expansion with bothpseudo-relevant documents and external resources improvethe retrieval. While the impact of expansion using anexternal resource is more significant.
