Development of Transportation Security Regulations by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission

After the attacks of September 11, 2001, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)determined that additional security measures should be put in place during the transport of spentnuclear fuel (SNF) and radioactive material in quantities of concern (RAMQC) and that currentsecurity regulations should be enhanced to further protect SNF during transport. As an interimmeasure, the NRC issued orders to licensees shipping SNF and RAMQC. Subsequently, theNRC promulgated additional requirements for the physical protection of irradiated reactor fueland RAMQC in transit. This presentation will discuss these new requirements.
