RD Status and Future Plan of Nuclear Forensics for Analytical Technology and National Library at JAEA

Illicit trafficking of nuclear materials and other radioactive materials has been a matter ofworld concern since early 1990s. Once the unknown nuclear/radioactive materials aredetected and seized from a nuclear security event, their origin, history and intended use willbe analyzed by nuclear forensics activity, and such information supports to improvenational nuclear security system.The Japan Government issued the national statement at Nuclear Security Summit in 2010to develop the technologies related to measurement and detection of nuclear materials fornuclear forensics. In response to this statement, Japan Atomic Energy Agency has startedR&D project on nuclear forensics technology from JFY 2011. The developments offundamental technologies of nuclear forensic analysis are expected to be finished by JFY2013, and the results will be shared with international community as a first step of theproject. This paper presents outline, present status and brief results of the development ofthe nuclear forensics analytical technology and nuclear forensics library at JAEA. Somefuture plan of the R&D project will be also introduced in the presentation.
