摘要

Upwelling is an oceanographic phenomenon that involves strong and cold of wind-driven motion and usually brings a mass of nutrient-rich water toward the surface of the sea. Upwelling is phenomenon or events related to the movement of the rising masses of sea water. The vertical movement is part of the integration of the ocean circulation but thousands to millions of times smaller than the horizontal flow. The vertical movement is occurring due to the presence of sea-water density stratification because with the addition of depth resulting in decreased temperature and density increase that raises energy to move water masses vertically. The sea is also stratified by other factors, such as increasing nutrient content with added depth. Thus the presence of vertical water movement will cause a significant effect on the nutrient content of certain depth layer. Research made for monitoring and observation of upwelling phenomena that occur in Hindia's Ocean south Java precisely in Fisheries Management Area ( WPP ) -RI 573 using MODIS satellite images Aqua/Terra monthly from 2006 to 2007 and use wind's data and turned into a vertical transport and than became upwelling index. The results of this research are the distribution of Chlorophyll-a concentration of the highest occurred in September 2006 reached 37353 × 4km2 = 149412km2 with chlorophyll concentration of 0.05 mg/m3 in the WPP-RI 573 Sea surface temperature on January to March warmer compared to the month of September to December on WPP-RI 573, the location of upwelling found plenty happening in September to November on WPP-RI 573. Aqua/Terra MODIS satellite image can be used as a tool to detect the occurrence of Up Welling in the Indonesian waters.
