SNPP DATA ACCESS FOR AGRICULTURAL MONITORING

The Suomi National Polar Partnership (SNPP) satellite carries five earth observation sensors, including the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). Data products from VIIRS relavant to agricultural monitoring include the vegetation index, land surface temperature, and fire detections. The ATMS and CriS instruments produce atmospheric temperature, pressure, and water vapor profiles for improved weather forecasting. In addition, there is an ATMS rain rate product. Widespread use of SNPP data is constrained by the HDF5 format, large download file sizes and additional processing required to geolocate and remove sensor related artifacts. NGDC is developing regional data services to reduce the barriers to use of SNPP data.
