Preliminary SEM data demonstrated that bone attachment and osseointegration is possible with a Si coating adjacent to the PC. Although, the amount of bone was less when comparing to the Ti plugs it was not considered statistically significant and longer time points need to be assessed. Further analysis by way of florescent and light microscopy are currently being performed to assess the effect on the biological healing zone and/or signs of a foreign body response/osteoclast activity due to the Si material, as well as evidence of newly formed osteoid and osteoblasts.
