Conclusion: Overall, these preliminary results suggest that the ND-based drug delivery system has the potential to target macrophages in vivo and home to the inflamed arthritic joints. Additional studies are ongoing in order to characterize the therapeutic effects of this system, including its direct effects on both circulating macrophages and those at the site of inflammation. Discerning these macrophage-nanoparticle interactions ultimately paves the way for the targeted treatment of a variety of inflammatory diseases, even beyond rheumatoid arthritis.
