For the next generation of FAW light duty truck, a LD diesel engine with high power, low emission and low fuel consumption is required. A new 3 L diesel engine has been developed to fulfill the requirement, which can meet EURO4 and EURO5 emission standards. Special attention has been paid to the reduction of the operating and service costs. Following FAW's 'W engine product development process, engine performance, structure and subsystem design were optimized and confirmed by CAD and CAE during concept phase, premium design and detail design phase. DOE method was applied to optimize combustion system and engine performance. The reliability and durability were validated according to FAW diesel engine mechanical development processes. By using cooled EGR, DOC and POC technologies, EURO4 emission standards has been achieved with a maximum rated power of 125 kW, maximum torque of 380 Nm and satisfactory fuel consumption. The engine features Double Over Head Camshaft (DOHC) driven by rear chain. Balance shaft module benefits NVH performance. Double layer cylinder head water jacket and M-type block water jacket structure enables this engine to endure a peak fire pressure more than 18 Mpa, which has been validated by reliability and durability test. It is unique in the market for FAW 3 L LD diesel engine to have a configuration with air compressor. By thorough development, FAW 3 L LD diesel engine realized the power and torque targets with low emission, satisfactory fuel consumption, high reliability and durability, and excellent NVH performance. The engine is expected to be the main power for light duty commercial vehicles for FAW.
