Precast Integral Abutments and Superstructure Bridge: A MassDOT ABC Case Study

This project replaced the existing 32’-6” span cast-in-place concrete T-beambridge carrying Route 62 (Princeton Road) over the Stillwater River in Sterling, MA, with a 45-foot span rolled steel beam bridge with composite pre-cast concrete deck. Featuring precastconcrete deck panels, abutments and wingwalls, this is the first integral abutment bridge inMassachusetts constructed with all precast components. Project design, detail, criteria,construction, materials specific requirements and lessons learned are presented.
