Unconventional Girder Erection on the Moses Wheeler Bridge

Site constraints limited the options available to erect plate girders on the I-95 MosesWheeler Bridge in Connecticut. Walsh / PCL Joint Venture and McNary Bergeron and Associatesdeveloped a unique girder erection method for Stage I of this project that incorporated cranes onthe existing bridge and temporary rolling carts to side launch girders into position. Extensiveconstruction engineering and planning was required to develop this procedure and overcomechallenges faced during construction.
