Alexander Hamilton Bridge Rehabilitation of Approach Span Superstructure

The Alexander Hamilton Bridge carries I-95 over the Harlem River in New York City. The $407 millionrehabilitation is the largest single-contract construction project in the New York Department of Transportation’shistory. Construction began in 2009 and will be completed this year. The project includes a new reinforcedconcrete deck and modifications to the approach superstructure while maintaining eight lanes of traffic on ahighly congested section of interstate highway in the midst of New York City. In a Value Engineering Study, newwelded plate girders were used in lieu of the intended truss girders and the proposed lateral bracing waseliminated. These changes simplified the design and construction as well as future inspection and maintenance.
