This work shows, for the first time, an Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) with a rare earth Europium(III) organic complex as the emitting layer, in particular Eu(BTA){sub}3bipy -[tris(1 -(2 - benzoyl)-3,3,3 - trifluoroacetone)]-bipyridine, europium(III)]. The OLED has a three layer structure configuration using TPD -[N,N' - bis(3-methylphenyl) -N,N'-diphenylbenzidine] and Alq3 -[aluminum - tris(8 - hydroxyquinoline)] as hole and electron transport layers respectively. Electroluminescence of the device shows pure 4f{sup}6 Eu{sup}(3+) transitions. The driving voltage is about 14 V and a normal electrical current operation of 1 - 2 mA. The wall plug efficiency is of about 3×10{sup}(-3)%.
