The UK Highways Agency (HA) communication infrastructure is made up of various legacy arrangements including use of RS485, V.26 and V.24 communication standards. The HA has a need to upgrade and standardise the communication infrastructure to be purely IP based. The IP Translator (1PT) has been developed, trialled and is being migrated to address the need to standardise existing communication infrastructure without the need for costly replacement of existing legacy roadside equipment. This new system offers a number of advantages such as greater resilience and the use of open standards for which there is a wide base of developers. A further development involves the use of an enhanced 'Fibre-Only' solution, which is now being deployed on the English motorway network as part of a Managed Motorway scheme. The new fibre based design extends IP to the edge of the Highways Agency network by delivering a high capacity and highly resilient IP network, of the type previously used in the HA's core network, up to the edge of the network. This is made possible by use of new hardened IP routers and switches which can be accommodated in roadside cabinets.
