Common Information Model (CIM) has been evolved as a standard for information modeling in the power systems. CIM is adopted by many utilities since it offers interoperability and facilitate model exchange for large systems. Object oriented development offers a lot of advantages in software engineering. Object oriented approach has been established in software engineering by providing three major software engineering goals: reusability, extensibility and flexibility. This paper presents an approach for modeling database using object oriented concepts, at the same time relying on the CIM standards. The paper also shows how CIM representation should be extended with power element catalogs in order to reduce the amount of data needed to be entered, to reduce system input errors, and to reduce application maintenance time.
