Feature modeling and machinability analysis for CAD/CAPP integration

This paper focuses on knowledge modeling for CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAPP (Computer-Aided Process Planning) integration. A workpiece representation based on feature modeling is suggested. Primary features (form features, precision features and technological features) are used to model geometry and tolerances. Interactions between primary features are highlighted. This model enables a direct mapping between CAD data and those related to CAPP. Form features, automatically extracted from CAD database, are the main components of a knowledge model for process planning that integrates geometric reasoning, tolerance analysis and constraint modeling.
